<p>This tool is the digital version of the MEC Wheel. It contains the medical eligibility criteria for initiating the use of contraceptive methods, which are based on the Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use, 5th edition (2015), a set of evidence-based guidelines provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). It aims to assist family planning providers in recommending safe and effective contraceptive methods for women with specific medical conditions or medically-relevant characteristics.</p>
<ul>
<li>The tool provides recommendations for initiating the use of nine common types of contraceptive methods:</li>
<ol>
  <li>Combined pills, COC (low-dose combined oral contraceptives, with ≤ 35 μg ethinyl estradiol)</li>
  <li>Combined contraceptive patch, P</li>
  <li>Combined contraceptive vaginal ring, CVR</li>
  <li>Combined injectable contraceptives, CIC</li>
  <li>Progestogen-only pills, POP</li>
  <li>Progestogen-only injectables, DMPA (IM,SC)/NET-EN (depot medroxyprogesterone acetate intramuscular or subcutaneous or norethisterone enantate intramuscular)</li>
  <li>Progestogen-only implants, LNG/ETG (levonorgestrel or etonogestrel)</li>
  <li>Levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device, LNG-IUD</li>
  <li>Copper-bearing intrauterine device, Cu-IUD</li>
</ol>
